Zuri Zanzibar: A Benchmark in Sustainable Hospitality

Zuri Zanzibar holds the distinction of being the world’s first hotel to receive EarthCheck’s Sustainable Design Gold Certification. EarthCheck is the global leader in environmental benchmarking and certification tailored specifically for the travel and tourism sector. Rooted in the principles of Agenda 21, the program evaluates projects across vital sustainability criteria including energy, water and waste management, social, cultural, and economic contributions, as well as innovation.

Throughout its development, Zuri Zanzibar made conscious choices to reduce its environmental impact by embracing sustainable design and using locally sourced materials. Hundreds of indigenous plants and trees were planted to enrich the landscape, while space was preserved for a guest-accessible spice garden. The resort proudly showcases island craftsmanship, with features such as wooden floors, doors, and roofs made from local materials.

Energy efficiency is a top priority, with the use of automatic sensor lighting in designated areas, energy-saving bulbs, and the innovative Evening Breeze cooling system, which consumes up to 75% less energy than conventional air-conditioning units.

Zuri’s water supply is produced through an advanced desalination system, ensuring no reliance on village water sources. This purified water is mineralized using BWT Aqua Mondo magnesium technology. To reduce plastic waste, Zuri uses glass bottles and natural drinking straws.

Set within a lush jungle, Zuri Zanzibar stands as an ecological sanctuary, committed to protecting the environment, conserving endangered species, and demonstrating how responsible tourism can positively impact nature.

Seasonality and sustainability also define Zuri’s culinary offerings. The resort serves ocean-friendly menus crafted from locally sourced ingredients. All kitchen waste, food scraps, and paper are composted, while fresh produce is supplied by small organic farms. Fish and seafood are purchased directly from local fishermen, ensuring sustainable fishing practices are respected. Additionally, all cleaning products used by housekeeping are eco-friendly and safe for the environment.

As an integral part of the Kendwa village community, Zuri Zanzibar actively supports local initiatives focused on education, environmental protection, and waste management. Since 2015, the resort has partnered with the Jambiani Tourism Training Institute to equip young people with valuable hospitality skills. In 2016, Zuri launched the ‘Keep Kendwa Clean!’ project in collaboration with Zanrec, a waste management company, which Zuri continues to fund to ensure the program’s ongoing success and a cleaner, healthier environment for the community. The resort also regularly organizes village clean-up events to foster local pride and sustainability.
